Tinkham Traditional

We were very excited to work with such a wonderful couple on our Tinkham Traditional project. It was so gratifying to see them extremely happy in their gorgeous brand new space. And what a transformation! Amazing work, Tena!

Here is an email we received after the project was completed:

We can't thank you all enough for our beautiful kitchen.
Tena really took the time to understand our priorities, style and budget.  Her design was incredible and she guided us through the maze of  available choices in colors, cabinets, counter tops, organizers, etc. and helped us select the right upgrades to match our vision.
Jill you were absolutely amazing on the appliance end, I couldn't be more happy with the induction stove top, Wolf ovens, and the Sub Zero refrigerator.  You made sure that the appliances were here when they were needed and handle the few minor  issues that came up with such ease that we were stress free.
Kathy was there through the whole installation insuring that everything went as planned and eliminating any potential problems.  She was so supportive and cheered us on to the finish line.
The whole process went so smoothly.  It speaks to your knowledge, attention to detail and how much you care about your customers.  I would have no hesitation in recommending the Kitchen and Bath Details team to anyone looking to upgrade their kitchen.
Now that we have been using the kitchen for a few months, we realize just how pleased we are with the results and would not change a thing.

Westport Retreat

Every now and then, our Project Manager, Kathy, goes back to her roots as a kitchen designer.  She had the great pleasure of working with a wonderful couple on their Westport home.

Here's what Kathy had to say about the project:

Without question, the greatest challenge with this year-round family retreat was the limited space.   By eliminating two small rooms, a pantry and powder room, we enlarged the kitchen 40% to a total of 171 square feet.  Additionally, multiple traffic runs intersect the room, complicating the design.

The homeowners, a couple with three adult children, are passionate about entertaining at their numerous gatherings.   With a long list of cooking and food storage needs, and an eagerness to invest in the best quality, it became apparent that Wolf and SubZero appliances were the perfect solution.

Every inch of the kitchen had to be scrutinized in the design.  The custom cabinetry with inset construction was selected to compliment the stately coffered ceilings.  The beaded openings frame the flush inset Wolf oven and microwave.  Tandem installation of the fully integrated 700 Series SubZero refrigerator and wine storage unit added to the custom detailing we needed to create this elegant kitchen.

This lovely home has a 270 degree vista of Buzzards Bay.  The driftwood finish on the pantry and wet bar adds a contrasting rustic charm with a design nod to the sea, and ties in perfectly with the sleek stainless steel of the appliances.

Kitchen Backsplash

IMG_1469.jpg

The kitchen backsplash is always an area of concern when it comes to selecting materials and finalizing the kitchen design. Do you use a small stone backsplash with paint? Tile? Full stone backsplash? There are a lot of options out there, which makes it overwhelming. Our best advice is to start looking through magazines, idea books, and photos of our past projects for inspiration. Better Homes & Gardens released a great article featuring all different backsplash ideas. Click here to check it out! There are some great options – and unique ones too! And we are always here to help! Although we don't sell tile, we are still available for design consultations when going through the selection process!

Nantucket Inspired Kitchen | Custom Color Match

Here at Details, we want each one of our clients to have a kitchen that is unlike any other. We love that our custom cabinet line, Plain & Fancy, allows us to color match pretty much any piece of inspiration. We are now excited to announce that our semi-custom cabinet lines are following suit and processing custom colors as well!

In this specific kitchen, our client wanted to achieve the feel of a Nantucket cottage here in Mattapoisett. We selected soft, ocean like colors, and kept it fairly whimsical, to keep the formality out of the space. When our client was interviewed, she was so pleased that we were able to bring her dream kitchen to life. She also raved about the functionality of the kitchen. She loves how well the bar area in the adjoining room works for entertaining. It also keeps her guests out of the main cooking area. She also stated how much she enjoys the corner sink overlooking her back yard. Prior to the renovation, this space was the main doorway into the home. Everything was opened up and by doing so the house flows better and definitely seems more spacious. We are so happy to hear that we were able to create the kitchen of her dreams!

Custom Color Matching...
Do you have a paint color or piece of inspiration that you would like to see in your kitchen or bathroom cabinetry?
Here’s some information about the custom color process from Plain & Fancy:
“Requests for custom color matches arrive at Plain & Fancy every day, often in the form of a paint or fabric swatch. Working with our encyclopedic color library, trained technicians with years of experience begin the matching process by selecting an existing base resin that’s closest to the desired shade. Using bench-top mixers, the base resin is blended with high-concentrate pigment tints, which are painstakingly measured out in 0.01 gram increments until the correct color is achieved. The resulting paint is then hand-applied to a pair of sample doors—one for the customer and one for our library—employing the same two-stage technique used on the production floor: first a catalyst is added to help cure the finish; then heat is applied to create an extremely hard and durable surface. Once the customer has approved the match, full-scale production can begin.
We’ve so perfected the Plain & Fancy custom color match system that we are able to recreate accurately almost any hue from any source a customer cares to send us, however bold or subtle, quirky or classic. Recent cases in point include a pair of well-worn (and much-loved) denim jeans; a sky-blue vintage 1950s coffee cup; a weathered gray painted roof shingle; and, most challengingly, the delicate shade found on the underside of a wild mushroom.”

Seaside Kitchen Design with Entertaining in Mind

This client wanted a kitchen made for entertaining! With a large family always ready for a gathering, this space needed to be comfortable and functional for all. A large island was the perfect solution to accommodate seating for at least 10. Two sinks, one large dishwasher and two dishwasher drawers make clean-up quick and easy. Which, of course, allows the clients to enjoy more time with their company. The design was to be fresh yet subtle as to not take away from the gorgeous view of the harbor. This crisp style makes the open kitchen feel that much more spacious. All the design choices and decisions were made in order to accomplish a kitchen which is just as welcoming as it is efficient.

Middle Street Traditional Charm - S. Dartmouth

We are getting really excited for next week's home show! In preparation, we have been working hard putting together scrapbooks and photographs highlighting some of our best work. We stumbled upon this job, which was completed back in 2007. Tena designed this beautiful kitchen for an amazing couple in South Dartmouth.  It was a lot of fun designing this kitchen because our clients were so easy to work with and we knew that they would use the space to its full capacity (she is a phenomenal baker and loves to spend time in the kitchen).  Our clients selected Plain & Fancy Cabinetry (Surround: Buttercream Enamel on a Beaded Inset Vogue door; Island: Heirloom Cherry on a Beaded Inset Vogue door), Peacock Green granite countertops, and SubZero & Wolf Appliances. Just breathtaking! And they LOVE it!

Kitchen Tile Shopping Guide

FAQ of the day: When should tile be used in a kitchen? How much tile? Backsplash only? Floor only? Both? Is glass tile a good choice? Is it safe to use travertine on a floor?

These are all great questions! To help answer some of them, we wanted to post this article from the 'Elle Décor' website. If you are considering tile for your backsplash and/or floor, please take a minute to read through this article.

Kitchen Tile Shopping Guide

Tena worked with Bill Barr of Surroundings on this beautiful kitchen. Bill selected gorgeous glass tile for the backsplash and arranged it in a vertical fashion instead of the typical horizontal layout. Super funky and very unique!

Historic Kitchen Restoration, Cambridge

This project in Cambridge, MA called for a great deal of historic preservation and replication, as our client wanted to keep with the period of the home. We worked with our custom cabinet line, Plain & Fancy, to create a cabinet door style which mimicked the original wainscoting in the foyer of this striking historic home. A hand glazed latte finish was selected for the cabinetry and panels which mask the Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. Both granite and wood were used for the countertops and glass front cabinets were installed at the end of the island to preserve an “academic and historical” feel for the homeowners collection of cookbooks.

We had the great fortune to remodel the Butler’s Pantry (photo below center) at the same time as the kitchen was remodeled. Glass front cabinets were used in order to open up the small space, at the same time showcasing an impressive collection of barware. The rich dark wood is consistent with the look and feel of the home’s history and setting.
